Another one from Lord Finisher in 2006...

During summer of last year, I perused a familiar shopping center with the local Rhino's Video Games store. I noticed that they had a number of these titles, and seeing that I saw someone play a previous game, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, and I was interested, I decided to buy the title.

Once home, I quickly unwrapped it for its untold glory, playing it... and here's how it went.

Serph, leader of the Embryon Tribe, was with some of his soldiers checking out something unknown at the edge of both their territory, and the territory of their rivals, the Vanguards. Both relayed messages that each should remove the unknown item, and failure to do so would be considered an act of war. As such, a skirmish between the Vanguards and the Embryon proceeded, until... Serph noticed something, something he never saw before - a cat with silver eyes that peered into his soul. After a few volleys between both sides, the unknown object exploded, with each shard becoming a sphere of light that shot through everyone, infecting them. The last things that Serph's analyzer read was... Pearl of the Lotus Flower... VARNA. And with that, he transformed into a demon, slaughtering and ingesting both friend and foe alike. After the initial massacre, Serph found himself back in human form, along with his allies Heat, Argilla, Gale and Cielo; all of which were fixated upon the strangest sight where the unknown object once stood - a girl, without clothes, without a Tag Ring, with black hair. With that, their existence was changed forever.

Holy shit, I love this game. Well, I believe I've explained enough, so let's get down to this game's stats.

Story: 10 out of 10 - Demonic possession, slaughter, ingestion... need I say more?

Sound: 10 out of 10 - ****ing hardcore, man.

Voices: 9 out of 10 - They should've given Serph a voice - this silent protagonist stuff is damned annoying. Although I will admit I enjoy listening to Heat say "Come on... your ass is mine!!"

Music: 10 out of 10 - Awe inspiring.

Controls: 7 out of 10 - What do you expect? IT'S AN RPG!! Besides, there were some parts where the controls just sucked.

Ending: 5 out of 10 - Can you spell "OPEN ENDED"?! Besides, I already knew a sequel for the game was coming out anyways, so it just took a little time.

Replayability: 10 out of 10 - some actions you take in DDS1 determine what happens in DDS2, for instance, will you attain the "special rings" and added stats that come from annihilating special bosses and mastering all the mantras? Will you even attempt to defeat Demi-fiend, the protagonist from Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne? If not, you're a wanker, and you're missing out on a lot.

Overall: 61 out of 70. I doubt any other series could do this well, not even Final Fantasy.
