Bliddy hell, it's HOUGE.
I'm not even going to attempt to summarise the plot. there's just too much. Suffice to say that there's nearly 200 pages pre-hogwarts - but you do get to find out what the order of the phoenix is very early on, and those 200 pages aren't all buildup .
Those expecting returns of characters from previous books will be positively over the moon, just about everyone gets a couple of lines in this at some point, even lockhart.
In terms of readability - it's just the same as the other books, I read it in one six hour stint (not advised) ...but most books just send me to sleep if I try to do that.
There's bits of the book where you'll get frustrated at the main charactered, just as in book 4 (the harry/ron argument pre-task 1)...but in this case these frustrations lead to serious consequences...I'll say no more without a spoiler tag.
To compare it to the other books....would be very foolish, but if I had to, it is much closer to the style of book four than any other - there's a great deal more writing about what the main chaarcters thinking, and the plot is nowhere near as twisty as say, books 1 or 3...and once again the ending is very much open ended - I personally will be extremely unhappy if I have to wait 3 years for the next one!
To summarise: if you're a fan, gogogogogogogogogogo. an ESSENTIAL read. If you aren't, start at the beginning (i.e philosopher's stone), this book ties up so many loose ends (unfortunately not in particularly mind-blowing ways) from previous books you'll sit wondering what the hell the characters are on about half the time.
As a rather biased fan, I give it 4.8 out of 5. Looking forward to reading it again after my last exam on thursday...
Right, I'm off to see if I can get some sleep *rubs eyes*
