Another Pratchett review I did in 2007...
This being the second Story of The Discworld book for younger readers, and the first in which the character of Tiffany Aching appears - The Wee Free Men is about a a rowdy bunch of blue pictsies called the Nac Mac Feegles (fighting and drinking and being overly scottish) and 9 year old Tiffany Aching discovering herself to be somewhat unusual, and well...a witch!
Whilst down by the river one day with her baby brother, a big green monster with lots of large teeth rises up from the depths. Thinking this to be a bit odd - young Tiffany uses her sticky brother Wentworth as bait, and when said monster pops up again *THWACKS* it with a rather heavy frying pan.
There's a ripple in the universe, and a witch called Miss Tick comes to investigate, amazed to find a child witch living on "The Chalk" (turns out Tiffany's grandmother who used to mind the sheep was one)...and also one who has seen the legendary Nac Mac Feegle. When Tiffany's brother goes missing - it turns out that the Queen of the Fairies has been kidnapping the odd child or two.
How Tiffany learns she is a witch, gets back her brother, and comes to be leader (Kelda) of the wee free men (for a wee while) makes for very entertaining reading indeed. Although this book was originally intentioned for younger readers - it has a large adult populace who have taken a shine to this simple but enjoyable tale...due mainly to the shenanigans of the incorrigible pictsies.
If you're wanting a light enjoyable/silly read, then look no further - here's your book.
I would rate this a 9 out of 10....totally enchanting!
