Last night, I was sleeping peacefully when Coal decided to hassle Ebby again. Ebby's growling and hissing didn't deter Coal, and it sounded like he jumped her and started tangling with her. I sat up in bed and yelled "HEY!" at the top of my lungs - it sent Coal running out of my room. LF told me Coal got a good swat on his rump for that.

Silky's the same as ever - the wound in his side is healing okay, but yesterday it was draining. While Mom held him securely, I dabbed at the wound with a damp cotton ball.

Hungry house cats have a way of changing their purr to manipulate humans into making a dash for the can opener, a new study shows.

Karen McComb and her team of researchers from the University of Sussex say some cats mix a high-pitched cry within their purr specifically to push their owner's buttons when angling for a meal. They claim cats appear to be burying the "cry" within an otherwise pleasant purr to exploit innate tendencies humans have for nurturing offspring.

This vocal blend, which McComb calls a "solicitation purr", is hard for humans to ignore but is also less likely to get the cat ejected from the bedroom than meowing.

The researchers say a crucial factor of the noise is a high-frequency element embedded within the naturally low-pitched sound of a cat's purr.

"The embedding of a cry within a call that we normally associate with contentment is quite a subtle means of eliciting a response — and solicitation purring is probably more acceptable to humans than overt meowing."

McComb and her colleagues said they played recordings of regular and solicitation purrs to volunteers. They found even those with no experience of cats found the solicitation purrs to be "more urgent and less pleasant" than regular purring. When the team re-synthesized these purrs to remove the embedded cry, the urgency ratings for the purrs decreased significantly.

Not all cats, however, are in on the ruse: "It seems to most often develop in cats that have a one-on-one with their owners rather than in large household where there is a lot going on and such purring might get overlooked," she said. "Meowing seems to be more common in these situations."

House cats the team studied also apparently had a tendency not to perform when strangers were on the premises. "Cats exhibit this behavior in private with their owners, typically at anti-social times, such as first thing in the morning," McComb said.

"I've worked on communication and cognitive abilities in a wide range of mammals, including elephants and lions, but domestic cats were one of the most challenging subjects to date," she added.

The team's findings, The cry embedded within the purr, appear in the July 14 issue of the journal Current Biology.

Kitty-related anecdote off the port bow...

Yesterday, Mom was outside raking up yard waste from the backyard when she saw a good-sized black snake coiled up near the shed door. Silky was approaching it from one side and Coal from another side. Mom called Dad, who grabbed the hoe, shooed the cats away from it, and proceeded to smash the snake's head into a lifeless pulp with the hoe.

While Dad was doing that, Mom was calling me and LF to take a look. By the time I got there, Dad had killed the snake and LF was freaking out about it. I saw the snake's body and determined the color and size were right for a poisonous snake that lived in my neck of the woods - a water moccasin, also known as a cottonmouth.

Dad told me later the only thing I needed to know to prove beyond all doubt that it was a water moccasin - before he started bashing it with the hoe, its mouth was open enough to see the inside of the mouth (solid white, which is why a water moccasin is called a cottonmouth). It's a good thing Silky and Coal didn't jump it, otherwise either one or both of 'em would've been dead from snakebite.

Eeeeeeeep! Good thing they didn't tangle with it. I remember snakes in Australia. Grandpa had passed away, and I was mowing the lawn for my Nana. The grass around the metal paper bin was too long, so I moved it.

Coiled up under the bin was an 18inch snake (species and poison status unknown). Whilst it was still napping (despite my shriek), I ran and got the hoe (yeppers, snake weapon of choice - long handle sharp ish blade) and chopped the beggar into bits! Ran it over with the mower for good measure too.

I was about 13 at the time I think. Only time I ever tango'ed with a snake (though I did get chased up the back yard a couple of times by frilled-neck lizards)! :laugh:

LF's not too fond of snakes either. He kept going on and on yesterday about wanting a gun so he could blast the next one he saw.

Snakes freaked me out until I was 15. That was when me and the family went to Okefenokee Swamp Park and attended a presentation at the snake house (there was a little auditorium past where the snakes were on display) and they showed off a baby alligator and a red rat snake (it's nonpoisonous). After the presentation, everybody in the audience was allowed to touch the snake. I steeled myself and thought I would be sick - it wasn't bad at all. Rough texture, only looks slimy because since a snake doesn't have legs...how else can it move?

But all the same, I adopt a "leave it alone, it'll leave you alone" mindset. Most instances of snakebite are from the snake acting in self-defense.
