Capital new name for Oxford airport

It is more than 50 miles from the capital's centre but Oxford's airport has been rebranded - as "London Oxford".

Managers at the site, in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, hope the new name will raise its international profile and bring in more business.

A headline on the company's website now reads: "Welcome to London Oxford Airport."

Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce welcomed the change, which it claims will benefit the local area.

Claire Prosser, policy executive from the chamber, said: "Oxford and Oxfordshire is a place in its own right but you're linking tourism and business and it's an excellent business opportunity.

"We appreciate most orbital London airports are never that close, this shouldn't be that different."

The airport serves business customers, private plane owners and a flying school.

London Stansted Airport, in Essex, is about 40 miles from the capital, while London Luton Airport, in Bedfordshire, is about 35 miles away.

James Dillon Godfray, the airport's marketing manager, said the name change had been met with hostility in the university city. "Local people feel it's a snub to Oxford because they feel Oxford should stand on its own two feet," he said. "We are very proud of our business and Oxford as a destination, but this has nothing to do with Oxford."

And he insisted the change would not mislead international customers. "Fundamentally this is about raising awareness about our existence in the overseas business aviation market place," he said.

Not sure how big the airport is (as I never went there) but Oxford itself is a lovely city, and I'm not sure if this is a plus in its favour or not. :mu:
