This game appeared in arcades last Christmas, and it wasn't until recently that I got a chance to play DDR Extreme - which, to me, is DDR 8th Mix. I got to play it at Adventure Landing at Jacksonville Beach - DDR Extreme replaced DDR MAX2 (7th mix).

Another batch of new songs, and some songs from previous mixes make a triumphant return (including Butterfly, Dam Dariram, and Captain Jack Grandale Remix).

A few more songs attain the 10-foot difficulty - Bag, Paranoia Surivor, Paranoia Survivor Max, and one other (the name eludes me for the moment). Prior to DDR Extreme, the only songs that attain the 10-foot difficulty on Maniac were Max300 and MaxX Unlimited mainly because they were bloody fast.

A good mix of fast and slow songs, though...Pez, trust me on this, if you hated Jam Jam Reggae because it was slow, Bag is a lot worse in terms of speed. And given the fact it attains 10-foot difficulty on Maniac, Bag is bound to be the bane of many DDR players out there.

Jam Jam Reggae - 90 BPM
Bag - 65 BPM

Nonstop mode makes a return - so there are 3 options when you start a game - Regular, Nonstop, or Oni.

Oni mode - you play a certain set of songs that revolve around a certain theme, and it is required that you keep a combo going for as long as possible. It's because you're given a different life bar (looks like a battery with 3 sections) - and each time you get a Good, Boo, Miss, or N.G., you lose a section of your life bar. When the life bar is empty, it's game over. You're given a percentage in terms of how many Perfects you get (Greats don't count towards the percentage).

A new difficulty level arises - Beginner. It's useful for any new DDR players who are trying to get the hang of playing DDR before they join the regular DDR players. So, now, there are 4 difficulty levels to go with - Beginner, Basic/Light, Trick/Standard, and Maniac/Heavy.

From what I heard, DDR Extreme features about 230 songs - but I have to wait until all the unlock codes are provided before I know the exact number.

If Konami wants to make another mix, here's a suggestion - why don't they bring together ALL songs from every Bemani project of theirs (Beatmania, Keyboard Mania, Drum Mania, DDR, Para Para Paradise, etc.) and make...

DDR ULTIMATE!

Though I haven't seen all of the songs yet (all the unlock codes haven't been provided yet, but I'm waiting patiently), it will be a matter of time before DDR Extreme will be a real winner.

Overall: 4 DDR's out of 5.
