LD whipped this review up for us in 2005...
It's happened again - a PS2 game by Rockstar where doing crimes is the way to proceed.
This time, Carl "CJ" Johnson comes back to San Andreas after a self-imposed 5-year exile in Liberty City because gang violence (read: drive-by shooting) claimed his mother's life - which is strange because it was gang violence that killed his brother, Brian, 5 years earlier.
Besides the stuff one would expect from playing GTA3 and GTA Vice City, you will have to worry about CJ's appearance (i.e. clothes, haircut, fat & muscle) as well as earning respect, keeping energy up by eating, working out, and building up skills in using certain vehicles and firearms.
This game spans 3 cities, which I'm sure are modeled after (respectively in order of you going to them and doing your business there) Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas.
Vehicle missions, which were a side matter (and some might argue a staple) of the previous two GTA games make a comeback. As usual - Taxi, Firefighter, Vigilante, and Paramedic make a return, and two new ones (Pimping and Burglary) make a debut.
Instead of searching for hidden packages this time, each city has a certain required thing to do that is a requirement for 100% completion. In Los Santos, it's spray-paint the Grove Street Families tag over 100 rival gang tags. In San Fierro, it's take the 50 Photo Ops (use a camera to capture a floating symbol near a certain area or landmark). In Las Venturas, it's collect 50 Horseshoes. And in all 3 cities (and the Badlands west of Los Santos and south of San Fierro as well as the Desert between San Fierro and Las Venturas) - collect a grand total of 50 Oysters (boosts sex appeal and lung capacity - CJ can actually swim).
Complicated? It certainly is. Addictive? Of course. Lots of area? Hell yeah. It all adds up to what GTA: San Andreas is.
