Another quality LF review from 2003...
Armored Core:
The last war waged among nations, known as the "Great Destruction," ended with mankind vanishing from the surface of the Earth. The echo of humanity that survived left the howling winds and radioactive dust to make their home underground.
Half a century later, the concept of the "nation" is no more. Instead, Corporations lead and rule the populace. Though the world is making a rapid recoverty through ruthless corporate competition, social disorder resurfaces as disparites in wealth, terrorist outbreaks, and racism refuse to let the strife end.
It is a new world order, where lives are bought and sold in a twisted free market economy. But there are always exceptions to every rule...
The Ravens - mercinaries who take on any mission for a price, pledge allegiance to nothing and no one and exist beyond the control of the Corporations. Hired to tkae out the competition, the Ravens take no sides and fight without regard for good and evil.
You are a Raven.
This game is incredibly excellent, despite the fact that it was created for the PSX. Battles are constantly waged, you can take missions that have you terrorize the civilian population, you can infiltrate and secure technology from a rival firm, hell, you can even take on self-operating test dummies for AC parts. All in all, a very excellent game. Of course, there are always hidden weapons in a few levels, and those are hard enough to root out.
AC 1 has you put in the spotlight between the war between Chrome and Murakumo Millennium - both with their unique technologies. Chrome with their overwhelming research on new AC parts, Murakumo with their little "Plus" project.
The "Plus" project is a project where a person is outfitted with special items, techniques, abilities, and generally stuff you don't normally see. It has the ability to give Ravens enhanced abilities and skills they normally didn't have before. However... the only way you can become "Plus" is to rack up a huge debt, then die - Murakumo Millenium will take your body, upgrade it, revive it, and send you back into the firefight. You lose your previous identity, but you start fresh once more.
The destructuion of the "Plus" Project, in the end, will be the final mission - your final opponent will be the best Raven in the biz... Nine-Ball. The bad thing about this - there are two of them, the worst thing about this - both of them have all of the "Plus" abilities.
Have fun.
