Rockjock did this one for TLP in 2003...
Naturally, almost everyone in the world is a Simpsons fan. And if you could tell these people there was a game out there that featured almost every character and had some of the most insane missions to complete...well, only a special guest appearance by the Ramones could have possibly hepled.
The plot to The Simpsons: Hit and Run is that a secret alien conspiracy is trying to take over Springfield with camera shaped like bees, tainted cola and mind-control techniques. You get to play as Marge, Homer, Lisa, Bart, and Apu oddly enough. The game is totally centred around driving from one location to another in various cars. Some cars are available to all characters, such as Homer's family sedan, or are exclusive to the character (Marge's Canyonero). You can also buy some strange cars like Professor Frink's Hover Car, which you earn by completing a secret mission.
Sometimes the characters are able to change clothes, but you must buy the outfits. Most times they are decorative, but sometimes you must buy outfits to complete a mission (like Officer Marge). Outfits can be very expensive at times, and this can be extra frustrating when you have run out of places to earn a lot of coins.
The zippy gameplay is fun, and is the same sort of stuff you would see on Grand Theft Auto, except no deaths. Hey, it's a cartoon. There's a very strange meter to gauge how much damage you have caused. Let's call it the Karm-o-meter. After bashing too many cars, innocent pedestrians, or objects such as traffic lights, the police will accuse you of a hit and run and chase you. If they catch you, it's 50 coins. The Karm-o-meter will eventually go back down provided you don't hit anyone for a while. If you want it to go down really fast, duck into the Kwik-E-Mart or Moe's and it will disappear pretty fast.
The game is probably not meant for minors, surprisingly. Never mind the cartoony violence, mild cursing, or implied drug use (Otto makes a brief appearance). The cars you have to select from range in speed, acceleration, and ruggedness, and you can recognize almost all of them from the show. And the detail they put into this game as far as the maps go are excellent.
With so many missions to complete, the variety of characters, and the detail gone into mapping a virtual Springfield, this game deserves to be a million-cart...er, disk seller. (Having an Atari flashback. Sorry.)
I give this a hearty five "Bartman: The Bartening"s out of five. Best...review...EVER!!!
